Associate Eric Tang, Trainee Solicitor Tommy Liu and Partner Christopher Morley ran the Shanghai Half Marathon on December 4th 2011. For Eric the 21 Kilometre distance was comparatively easy, having last month joined the Hong Kong Law Society Team to run the gruelling 100 kilometre Trailwalker event across the Hong Kong SAR. For Tommy, this was his first half marathon, made all the more memorable as it took place in his home town. For Chris, the Shanghai half marked the end of a year of marathons having run in the New York and Beijing marathons earlier in the year.

Andrew Powner gave a speech in Amsterdam at the IBA Criminal Law conference on Mutual Legal Assistance.

Jonathan Midgley has been appointed the Regional Representative Asia General of the IBA organisation’ s Criminal Law Committee.

Jonathan Midgley announced on 15 November 2010 close ties between Haldanes and Velletta & Company. Jonathan Midgley was invited by the Criminal Law Committee of the IBA to give a speech entitled "Investigation of criminal cases, including Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) requests" at the IBA Annual Conference 2010 in Vancouver, Canada on 5th October 2010.

During the Session, Jonathan Midgley shared his experience in handling cross-border MLA requests and complex Letters of Requests proceedings. He also cited various high-profiled commercial crime cases conducted by him in the past involving Hong Kong and various jurisdictions, such as Germany, Italy, USA, UK and Macau.

Other speakers included various leading criminal practitioners from USA, UK and Argentina. The Session was well attended by over 30 delegates from all over the world.

As a Committee Officer and a National Representative in the IBA, Felix Ng attended the IBA Annual Conference 2010 in Vancouver, Canada from 3rd to 8th October 2010. He also gave a presentation entitled "Tax offences in cross-border cases: evasion or avoidance?" at the Business Crime Session on 7th October 2010.

During the Presentation, Felix Ng explored various multi-jurisdictional tax planning cases, from legitimate avoidance to tax evasion that are considered criminal. He also discussed the recent criminal prosecutions taken out by the Inland Revenue Department in Hong Kong and the relevant Court rulings.

Other speakers on the Panel included various experienced tax and criminal practitioners from Italy, France, the Netherlands, Canada and USA.
