Experience:
In 1982, Hong Kong witnessed its first big commercial crime prosecution. Jonathan was instructed by the defendant. After a protracted trial, the defendant was acquitted and costs were awarded in his favour. From that time on Jonathan has been legal adviser to defendants in many important criminal cases. As a result, his international connections have grown strong, particularly as a result of his extradition work for people being sent either from or to Hong Kong.
Jonathan is still frequently in court as an advocate but also has a good working relationship with a number of the leading Hong Kong barristers whom he can call on in the event that counsel is required. In addition, he has a network of top criminal defence lawyers both at Haldanes and in various countries around the world, which is important in providing a quick and effective service to clients.
At the time he joined Haldanes, the firm was already gaining a reputation as an aggressive and inventive litigation practice. Jonathan quickly became involved in some highly publicised criminal prosecutions, acting always for the defence. From the turn of the century Jonathan's white collar criminal practice has been busier than ever, and the criminal law practice of Haldanes has expanded to cope.
