The Hong Kong AI International Film Festival Association (HKAIIFF) launched the “AI Content Creators Global Growth Plan” under its HKAIIFF MCN operational unit on September 4, 2026. The initiative targets creators across four categories—AI film works, AI tools/industry reviews, film commentary, and virtual avatars/AI IPs—using mainland video platforms like Douyin for content growth, Hong Kong as an institutional hub, and global platforms like TikTok and YouTube for international distribution.

The plan builds upon the foundation of the inaugural HKAIIFF held in July 2026, which mandated a minimum 51% AI participation threshold. In August, the associated Hong Kong AI Film Market recorded its first batch of transactions, completing deals for 101 AI-native and related works worth over US$12 million across television, streaming, aviation, and hospitality networks. Meanwhile, the HKAIIFF INDEX utilizes the IXF metadata framework to register AI works, workflows, and characters as searchable digital assets across 12 lifecycle stages.

Leveraging Hong Kong’s robust copyright framework, clear computer-generated work ownership rules, and IP rights management tools, the initiative ensures creators establish compliant rights chains for international procurement. By streamlining rights clearing, market matching, and overseas licensing, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a vital international creative hub that connects mainland AI content creators directly to global capital and distribution channels.

TikTok parent company ByteDance is preparing to introduce an artificial intelligence model focused on real-time spatial video generation. The development positions ByteDance to compete directly with tech giants Meta Platforms and Alphabet in spatial computing, robotics, and autonomous systems applications.

Built upon ByteDance’s existing cinematic video generation model, Seedance—developed by the Doubao large model team—the new spatial AI architecture allows users to construct interactive, highly immersive 3D virtual environments. Target application scenarios include livestreaming, micro-dramas, and interactive gaming experiences. The model operates at ultra-low latency, running at roughly 0.05-second delays and 20 frames per second, placing users directly inside dynamic digital settings.

By transferring heavy computation tasks for immersive content generation to the cloud, the spatial AI model aims to lower hardware barriers and production costs for virtual reality (VR) hardware. The launch underscores ByteDance’s broader strategic pivot toward enterprise video generation and spatial media capabilities, backed by a significant funding pool allocated for global AI infrastructure expansion. Industry observers view this technology as a key enabler for next-generation digital interaction across commercial short video, live commerce, and spatial computing platforms.

Data from the China Film Administration reveals that mainland China’s 2026 summer box office (June 1 to August 31) generated 12.498 billion yuan (RMB), reflecting a 4.45% year-on-year increase. Cinema admissions exceeded 340 million, up 5.86% year-on-year, while total screenings hit a record 38.51 million sessions, marking the market’s strongest summer performance in three years.

Data from Beacon Professional Edition shows that Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer topped the chart with 2.315 billion yuan, serving as the benchmark blockbuster and revitalizing classic Hong Kong-style comedy IP. It was followed by Once Upon a Time in the Middle East (1.951 billion yuan) and the breakout indie hit Eight Immortals! (1.846 billion yuan). Hollywood releases maintained a moderate footprint, led by Spider-Man: Brand New Day (1.539 billion yuan) and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey (over 600 million yuan).

Industry dynamics shifted away from single-tentpole monopolies toward a balanced, multi-hit competitive ecosystem. While June saw a slow start, July and August contributed nearly 90% of total seasonal box office revenues. Small-to-medium budget films performed strongly on word-of-mouth appeal, demonstrated by newcomer director debut Eight Immortals!. The trend highlights maturing mainland audience preferences that prioritize narrative depth and emotional resonance over generic foreign franchises, reinforcing a content-driven market trajectory.

Chief Executive John Lee’s upcoming 2026 Policy Address will announce the establishment of a dedicated “One-Stop Foreign Film Shooting Support Team” under Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency (CCIDA). The initiative aims to streamline shooting logistics for overseas and Mainland Chinese film productions taking place in Hong Kong, addressing key operational bottlenecks such as processing work visas, coordinating temporary traffic management, and securing site permits. Additionally, the government plans to pilot the provision of vacant non-residential land parcels to encourage local and incoming crews to construct film sets in the city.

Industry veterans, including producer Eric Chu—who helped coordinate Paramount Pictures’ Transformers: Age of Extinction shoot at Quarry Bay’s “Monster Building”—highlighted that while Hong Kong retains structural strengths such as script freedom and unique urban aesthetic density, global film projects face fierce competition from Southeast Asian nations offering 20% to 50% production tax rebates.

Legislative Council member Kenneth Fok welcomed the one-stop service mechanism while advocating for structured tax incentives or matching grants tied to local hiring ratios and international exposure. Fok emphasized that hosting high-profile global productions delivers immediate economic spillover effects across hospitality, logistics, and tourism, while reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as an international visual storytelling hub.

Expressing gratitude for the honor, Hui shared her pride in attending the ceremony in person while reflecting candidly on her long career and current film projects under development, which remain focused on literary and arts genres.

Addressing the ongoing downturn in the regional film industry, Hui acknowledged the complex dilemmas facing Hong Kong cinema. She noted that relying solely on the domestic market is financially unsustainable, whereas tailoring productions for broader international appeal often risks diluting unique local characteristics. To support filmmakers during this challenging climate, Hui called on the government to increase funding and financial assistance. She encouraged emerging directors to remain persistent by utilizing accessible mobile technology and low-cost tools to continue practicing their craft, even if traditional theatrical distribution remains competitive.

Hui also expressed an open and optimistic stance regarding artificial intelligence in filmmaking. She stated that she does not fear AI replacing human talent or actors, but rather views it as a valuable tool for lowering production costs and boosting technical efficiency. While emphasizing that core creative vision must remain human-driven, Hui confirmed she is open to integrating AI tools into future productions whenever appropriate to enhance visual storytelling.

Director Wen Muye’s latest feature Once Upon a Time in the Middle East, starring Shen Teng, Jiang Qiming, and Aarif Rahman, is set to open in Hong Kong cinemas. Following a one-month run during the mainland summer season, the film has grossed 2.1 billion yuan (approx. HK$2.45 billion) with an 8.7 score on Douban, positioning it among the summer’s top-performing commercial releases.

Inspired by real-life events, the narrative follows Xu Fu (played by Shen Teng), a Northeast Chinese diner owner who travels to the Middle East in the early 2000s to work at a Chinese eatery named “Dragon Restaurant” to settle debts. Alongside front-desk manager Ma Junsheng (Jiang Qiming), Xu turns the struggling restaurant into a thriving hub. When regional conflict breaks out, the eatery becomes a peaceful sanctuary amid the turmoil, where Chinese culinary staples provide comfort to locals, soldiers, and orphaned children.

The production marks Wen Muye’s first IMAX-shot project, featuring a 100,000-square-meter Middle Eastern city set built at a 1:1 scale at Shandong’s Oriental Movie Metropolis. Transitioning from his traditional comedic persona, Shen delivers a grounded performance emphasizing resilience and humanity. Wen noted that the film contrasts culinary warmth with war’s destruction, capturing an everyday worker’s desire for peace.

(9) Dayo Wong Reportedly Set to Star in Yan Ting’s Directorial Debut The Rainy Night Stalker

The Rainy Night Stalker

Hong Kong singer and music video director Yan Ting is making his feature film directorial debut with The Rainy Night Stalker. Produced by Allen Chan, the project is loosely inspired by the infamous 1980s “Rainy Night Butcher” serial killer case involving Lam Kor-wan, reimagining the historical real-crime narrative into an original suspense thriller.

Industry anticipation surged following reports that box-office star Dayo Wong is in talks to head the cast. Speculation mounted after Wong was spotted alongside veteran actor Simon Yam and Yan Ting, hinting at a high-profile ensemble collaboration. The film marks a significant dramatic departure for Wong, who has recently dominated Hong Kong cinema with record-breaking legal and social comedies like A Guilty Conscience and The Last Dance. Instead of a straightforward recount of the murders, the script focuses heavily on psychological profiling, criminal investigation, and the societal atmosphere of 1980s Hong Kong.

The production reflects a growing trend in Hong Kong’s film industry where multi-hyphenate creative talent transitions from music and commercial production into mainstream commercial cinema. By combining high-concept local crime history with proven box-office talent, the project aims to appeal to both local cinema enthusiasts and international genre film distributors seeking authentic Hong Kong crime narratives.

(11) Director Raymond Wong’s The Dating Menu Marks Hong Kong’s First All-A Cappella Film Soundtrack by Composer Joseph Ho

The Dating Menu

Directors Raymond Wong and Frankie Chung’s feature film The Dating Menu features Hong Kong’s first—and potentially world-first—entirely a cappella original film soundtrack. Premiering at the Hong Kong International Film Festival before its general theatrical run, the film’s innovative score was composed entirely by veteran Hong Kong a cappella practitioner and instructor Joseph Ho.

Director Wong selected an all-vocal score to complement the film’s core theme of intimate human interaction over meals, matching the organic nature of live human voices. Joining the production during early development without a finished script or footage, Ho created preliminary music demos based on narrative outlines. This allowed early collaboration with the directors, who integrated Ho’s demos directly into the initial film assembly cuts rather than relying on temporary temp tracks.

To overcome the sonic homogeneity of a long-form vocal score, Ho collaborated with sound engineering partners King Lam and Chun-Ki Mak, applying digital mixing techniques to alter vocal textures for specific urban scenes—such as synthesizing classic 56K dial-up internet sounds. Ho assembled a prominent lineup of local a cappella vocalists tailored to distinct singing styles ranging from R&B to classical bel canto, featuring independent singer Winky Wong on the title track. Following positive audience reception across social media, the production team confirmed plans to release an official soundtrack album showcasing this landmark vocal project.
