Beijing is making efforts to improve relations with Seoul by welcoming South Korean tourists and cultural imports like K-pop. This includes visa-free entry for Chinese tour groups to South Korea and the return of K-pop events in China, such as performances by girl groups IVE and Twice. Additionally, South Korean director Bong Joon-ho’s film Mickey 17 has been screening in Chinese cinemas, fueling hopes for further easing of restrictions on South Korean entertainment products.

China unofficially banned South Korean entertainment products in 2016 after its government  agreed to deploy a US missile defence system on its soil. The recent cultural exchanges are seen as a positive step towards mending ties between the two nations, especially as both face new tariffs from Washington. Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean officials have expressed a desire to strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges. During a meeting in Tokyo, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yul agreed to work together to restore cultural ties and improve mutual trust.

Despite political turmoil in South Korea, including the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol, Beijing is taking a cautious approach to relations. Observers believe that if the opposition Democratic Party, which favors a balance between Beijing and Washington, takes power, there could be more opportunities for rapprochement. China is signaling goodwill while waiting to see how the political landscape in South Korea evolves.

Cantopop singer Gloria Tang Tze-kei, known as G.E.M., has taken advantage of the downturn in Hong Kong’s property market by purchasing two flats in Wan Chai at a 35 percent discount from their peak price three years ago. She acquired the 2,480 sq ft units in Leon Court for HK$85 million (US$10.9 million), completing the transactions in early March. The previous owner had combined the flats into a duplex, and the discounted price reflects a significant drop from a similar unit sold for HK$65 million in 2022.

Hong Kong celebrities often invest in property, with recent increases in the estimated rental values of luxury homes owned by stars like Stephen Chow and Andy Lau. Chow’s house on The Peak saw a 2.7 percent rise in rateable value to HK$6.72 million (according to data released by the Rating and Valuation Department last week), while Lau’s home in Ho Man Tin gained 2.4 percent to HK$6.26 million. The rateable value of a property owned by Keung To, a member of the boy band Mirror, also rose by 13 percent, indicating an improvement in the rental market despite a slump in home prices.

In January, an index tracking rents increased by 0.42 percent month on month, while lived-in home prices fell to their lowest point in eight years. This trend highlights the resilience of the rental market in Hong Kong, even as property prices continue to decline.

Taiwanese entertainer Huang Tzu-chiao has been charged with violating the Child and Youth Sexual Exploitation Prevention Act for purchasing and possessing child sexual exploitation material. Last year, the Taipei District Court sentenced him to eight months in prison and fined him NT$100,000. On 26 March, the High Court held its first hearing for the appeal, during which Huang remained silent in front of the media.

Huang’s legal troubles began during the MeToo movement when he was accused of sexual harassment. Although the Taipei District Prosecutors Office initially dropped the charges due to insufficient evidence, they discovered seven child sexual exploitation videos in his possession during a search. This led to a two-year deferred prosecution, which sparked public outrage over the perceived leniency. The High Prosecutors Office then ordered a continued investigation, resulting in formal charges and the initial sentencing.

During the recent hearing, Huang, dressed in a blue shirt and white cap, admitted to some of the charges related to possessing child sexual exploitation material but denied other accusations, including those related to violating personal data protection laws. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 14 May.
