Their joint appearance created a frenzy among fans, eager to catch a glimpse of the two icons. South Korean entertainment powerhouse HYBE has officially opened a subsidiary in Beijing, marking its fourth major international expansion after Japan, the U.S., and Latin America. The move comes as China, the world’s fifth-largest music market, shows signs of lifting its unofficial ban on South Korean cultural imports, which had been in place since 2016–2017. HYBE, home to global acts like BTS, Seventeen, and ENHYPEN, aims to leverage this shift to boost its artists’ presence and revenue in the region.

The expansion into China coincides with reports of HYBE’s interest in establishing a local office in Mumbai, India, although the company clarified that no concrete plans are in place yet. HYBE has previously used acquisitions to enter new markets, such as its 2023 purchase of Latin label Exile Music and its US$1 billion acquisition of Ithaca Holdings in the U.S. These moves reflect HYBE’s aggressive global strategy to diversify beyond its South Korean base.

In a related development, HYBE is selling its 9.38% stake in rival SM Entertainment to Tencent Music for nearly US$180 million. This transaction, along with SM and Tencent’s new partnership, underscores growing Chinese investment in K-pop and signals a competitive shift in the region’s entertainment landscape.

Kenneth Fok, a Hong Kong lawmaker representing the cultural and entertainment sectors, has called on the government to ease cinema licensing rules to allow venues to host live performances and sports broadcasts. His proposal follows the announcement that Golden Harvest’s MegaBox cinema will close on 9 June, becoming the fifth of the chain’s theatres to shut down since April 2024. Fok warned that without intervention, the shrinking number of cinemas could discourage residents from moviegoing altogether.

Fok highlighted that Hong Kong’s box office heavily relies on Hollywood films, which account for 70–80% of revenue. With the U.S. box office experiencing a downturn, local cinemas are feeling the impact. As of May, only 51 cinemas remain in operation across the city, down from 112 in 1994. The closures are attributed not only to declining attendance but also to operational challenges, such as expiring leases and rising rents.

Despite the closures, industry figures remain hopeful. Tenky Tin of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers emphasized that committed operators still exist. Meanwhile, MegaBox has announced that a new cinema by CineArt will open at the location next month, offering a glimmer of hope for the industry’s future.

Kate Tsui, once a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s entertainment scene, has been living a low-profile life since announcing her retirement in 2019. After a 15-year acting career, she sold her car and luxury property, deactivated her social media accounts, and left Hong Kong to pursue further education in Europe. Tsui, who had previously studied jewellery design and coloured gemstones, completed a Master’s degree in psychology at the University of Hong Kong and expressed her intention to pursue a doctorate abroad.

Despite her retreat from the public eye, Tsui remains a subject of fascination. During Raymond Lam’s recent concert series, fans fondly recalled her guest appearance with him 15 years ago. Lam himself referred to her as a “missing person,” noting their lack of contact. However, actress Jessica Hsuan confirmed she still keeps in touch with Tsui, who prefers to maintain her privacy.

Recently, a netizen spotted Tsui at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. Dressed casually in a jumpsuit and sneakers, she appeared relaxed and content. The sighting sparked admiration online, with many praising her graceful transition to a quieter life and expressing happiness at seeing her well.

Rumors of a rekindled romance between Eddie Peng and Jolin Tsai have been circulating online, fueled by fans comparing their social media posts and spotting supposed clues suggesting they’ve been secretly dating for years. One example cited by netizens was a 2019 Valentine’s Day photo of Jolin with a rose, which appeared shortly after Eddie was seen with a similar flower. Speculation intensified when Eddie was reportedly seen attending one of Jolin’s concerts.

In response, Eddie Peng’s studio issued a strong statement denying the rumors, emphasizing that the claims are “seriously inconsistent with the facts” and based on unverified sources and misleading content. They criticized the use of edited public footage and speculative reporting, accusing some online accounts of deliberately hyping the story for attention.

To curb the spread of misinformation, Eddie’s team has engaged a law firm to investigate and collect evidence, with plans to pursue legal action against those responsible.
