Partner Felix Ng speaks in Civil & Criminal Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2026

Our Criminal Defence Partner and Head of Antitrust and Competition Law, Felix Ng, was invited to speak on a panel titled “Asset recovery when criminal authorities are involved” at the International Bar Association (IBA) “When Litigation Meets Crime Conference” conference 2026 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The Civil & Criminal Panel
This international panel (comprising civil and criminal experts from Brazil, Switzerland, UK, US and Hong Kong) examined the complex challenges that arise when civil litigators, liquidators and creditors pursue global civil actions while parallel criminal investigations and proceedings are ongoing.
Felix exchanged views with other panelists on effective strategies in pursuing asset recoveries in cases involving fraud, misappropriation and money laundering while criminal authorities are simultaneously targeting the same assets. He also shared case experience in navigating this complex interplay among stakeholders with diverse interests and utilising mutual legal assistance avenues to maximize global recoveries.
In addition, Felix highlighted the essential “tool kit” and other crucial issues that criminal and civil litigators should bear in mind in these parallel proceedings:
- Restraint Order, Confiscation Order and Compensation Order in criminal courts;
- Mareva injunction, Bankers Trust Order, Norwich Pharmacal Order and Anton Pillar Order in civil actions;
- Standard of proof, limitation period and time frame in civil vis-à-vis criminal proceedings;
- Admissibility of criminal evidence in civil proceedings;
- Privilege against self-incrimination
