(6)        Complaints Flood In After Disappointing Meet-and-Greet with Real Madrid Legends

Following a chaotic meet-and-greet event for local football fans, Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog has received 17 formal complaints. Fans had anticipated interactions with legendary players from Real Madrid CF during an exhibition match, with ticket packages priced at nearly HK$7,000.

The issues arose during a meet-and-greet session held on 19 December, a day before the highly anticipated exhibition match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Fans who purchased the “Experience Set” ticket, which cost HK$6,880, were frustrated when they were informed that the session for Real Madrid supporters had concluded before they could enter. Although some fans were eventually admitted, they discovered that key players, including Luís Figo, Roberto Carlos, and Fabio Cannavaro, had already departed, while Iker Casillas was present for only a short time.

June Lee, president of the local Real Madrid fan club, voiced the disappointment of fans who felt misled. Although organizers offered to collect items for signatures and promised a group photo, no photo was taken, and only one player was available for autographs. Both the police and the Customs and Excise Department have received reports related to the event and may take action if any Trade Descriptions Ordinance violations are confirmed. This incident continues a pattern of controversies surrounding major sporting events in Hong Kong, following a previous incident involving Argentine football star Lionel Messi that drew significant public ire earlier in 2024.
