Haldanes joins anti-drug talks with secondary school students

At Haldanes we have always believed it is important to give back to the community in which we live and work.

As part of our ongoing commitment, Partner Felix Ng and Associate Joanne Lam from our award-winning criminal defence team were, invited to speak at “Abide by the Law Legal Forum Series 2024: Project GATES”, jointly organised by the Law Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Police Force Kwai Tsing District, the Police Psychological Services Unit and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups.

The aim of the event was to educate young people on the devastating effects of drug use and to help them better understand the legal consequences.

Sessions took place in HKSYC&IA Chan Nam Chong Memorial College and Cotton Spinners Association Secondary School, with a total of about 500 secondary school students participating.

During the highly interactive sessions, Felix and Joanne shared their first-hand experience handling criminal cases, especially dangerous drug offences, with a strong emphasis on the criminal proceedings and penalties for individuals involved with drugs, and the harmful consequences of drug abuse.

Other speakers sought to bring home the destructive consequences of drug abuse, some from a personal and others from a professional perspective. One young individual shared his own traumatic story of drug abuse, highlighting his torturous personal journey through drug addiction, rehab, relapse, arrest and trial proceedings.

From the professional perspective, clinical psychologist Dr. Kenix Kung, explained the psychology behind youth drug addiction, while social workers from the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups provided insights into how they worked with young addicts to help them get clean and reintegrate into society.
