Partner Felix Ng speaks at the Transnational Crime Conference in Athens 2026

Haldanes is pleased to share that our Criminal Defence Partner and Head of Antitrust and Competition Law, Felix Ng, was invited as a speaker at the prestigious 28th Annual Transnational Crime Conference of the International Bar Association (IBA) held in Athens, Greece in May 2026.

About the IBA Conference in Athens

The annual event brought together over 250 leading judges, international prosecutors, corporate counsel and top-tier criminal defence advocates from across the globe to discuss the latest trends and challenges in transnational criminal matters as well as the best practices of the industry.

Joining an elite panel of global trial experts in Athens, the cradle of democracy and the birthplace of jury trials, Felix addressed an international audience on the subject “How to Prepare a Trial: a Comparative Approach” exploring how international criminal practitioners could navigate complex criminal trials spanning numerous common law and civil jurisdictions with diverse legal systems and trial procedures.

Panel Discussion – Criminal Trials

The criminal trial issues discussed included:

  1. Criminal trials in adversarial settings with emphasis on viva voce evidence (common law jurisdictions) vs. inquisitorial proceedings with dossier de procédure (civil law jurisdictions);
  2. the fine line between permissible witness preparation and illegal “coaching” of witnesses;
  3. the appointment, role and specialist evidence of expert witnesses;
  4. the strategies and techniques in cross-examination, including the famous Brown v Dunn rule in the common law world;
  5. use of “voir dire” (a trial within a trial) to determine the admissibility of confessions or digital evidence.

During the session, Felix shared his over two decades of criminal trial experience concerning the above topics, including anecdotes of the winning strategies in transnational criminal cases and the “do’s and don’ts” in trial preparation and cross-examination.

Global Speakers

In addition to Felix, the global speakers from civil and common law jurisdictions comprised:

Other sessions of this conference include: Use of AI in Criminal Investigation and Defence, Transnational Enforcement of International Corruption, global financial prosecution by the revolutionary European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) etc.

As the current secretary of the IBA Business Crime Committee, Felix also attended a retreat with his fellow committee officers in Aegina island to make plans for the IBA Annual Conference in Copenhagen in October 2026 and the next Transnational Crime Conference.
