(1)    Illegal gambling ads put Meta under pressure across Asia

Regulators across Asia are increasing pressure on major social media platforms as illegal gambling promotions continue to appear in markets where betting is restricted or banned. Authorities argue that companies like Meta must take greater responsibility for how paid adverts, affiliate links and algorithm-driven content expose people to unlawful operators, particularly in jurisdictions that prohibit gambling.

Strategic consultant Monica Shafaq stresses that platforms should not allow gambling ads in countries where betting is illegal, warning that the scale of networks such as Facebook and Instagram mean even a small volume of violations can reach millions. Enforcement concerns are particularly acute in places like the Philippines and Indonesia, where governments have banned offshore operators, blocked millions of gambling sites, frozen betting-related bank accounts and dismantled cross‑border syndicates, yet still see gambling promotions surfacing on mainstream platforms.

Protecting minors has become a central theme of the debate. Shafaq notes that social media firms already have sophisticated tools capable of implementing robust age checks, tightening behavioural targeting and policing influencer marketing, but says current safeguards fall short of preventing under‑18s from seeing gambling content. Indonesia’s move to bar under‑16s from several major platforms from late March 2026 underlines growing willingness to restrict access outright where voluntary measures are viewed as insufficient.

Some observers caution that tougher ad controls could push operators into underground channels, but Shafaq argues this risk cannot excuse weak enforcement. In her view, global platforms are not neutral hosts but powerful advertising ecosystems; if they deploy stricter controls, illegal gambling operators will find it much harder to reach audiences at scale.

Italian firm Giochi Tecnologici Italiani (“GTI”) Gaming has partnered exclusively with IPG International to distribute its smart casino and RFID solutions across Asia-Pacific, targeting integrated resorts and gaming floors with real-time data tools for table management and security.

GTI’s offerings, including RFID-enabled chips, the Casino Information Management System (CIMS), and automated accounting software, combat counterfeiting, streamline operations, and provide analytics, aligning with regional operators’ push for “smart tables.”

IPG International, an Australia-based supplier since 1989 serving casinos and cruise lines, will leverage its regional network in Southeast Asia and Australasia to integrate these into new projects and existing floors, combining GTI’s innovations with local operator relationships.

Sevilla FC has partnered with Asian sports betting brand K9Win as its official betting partner for the region during the current season, aiming to boost the club’s global presence through targeted fan engagement.

The collaboration emphasizes digital initiatives tailored for Asian audiences, including K9Win branding in live match broadcasts, exclusive promotions, VIP tickets, and hospitality packages to heighten football excitement among regional fans.

This deal fits into Sevilla FC’s broader international sponsorship strategy, mirroring an earlier January agreement with PIN-UP GLOBAL as the betting partner for Latin America, where the brand gained visibility on the club’s digital assets in markets like Mexico and South America.

Through such regional partnerships with gaming firms, Sevilla FC enhances mutual brand recognition worldwide, following a growing trend in football where clubs secure localized sponsorships to expand commercial reach.

South Korean authorities have rolled out a robust public reward program via Korea Sports Leisure Co., Ltd., to eradicate illegal sports gambling networks thriving online despite stringent regulations. Managed through the Illegal Sports Toto Reporting Centre, the initiative empowers citizens to report operators, users, and promoters by submitting specifics like website URLs, access details, or evidence of illicit activities through a dedicated website or hotline.

Rewards are tiered by impact: up to ₩200 million ($150,000) for tips dismantling major illegal betting operations, ₩50 million ($37,500) for match-fixing cases threatening sports integrity, ₩15 million ($11,200) for reports on site promotions or intermediaries, and ₩100,000 ($75) per verified gambling-linked bank account, with no cap on the latter. Safeguards prevent abuse, such as limiting payouts for duplicate mirrored sites, and informants receive mobile notifications post-investigation.

This expansion targets not just websites but financial pipelines, addressing underground risks like financial harm to users lacking licensed protections. By fostering public participation, the program bolsters efforts to safeguard the official Sports Toto system, preserve competition fairness, and combat sophisticated cross-border syndicates in South Korea’s tightly controlled betting landscape.
