International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition 2023

Our Criminal Defence partner and Head of Antitrust and Competition Felix Ng is honoured to be appointed a judge in the International Criminal Court (ICC) Moot Court Competition for another year. Organised by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University and the International Bar Association, the ICC Moot Court Competition attracted top students of 80 universities from 52 countries and six continents worldwide to participate. The final round was held in ICC courtroom in the Hague, the Netherlands in late June 2023.

This ICC competition was particularly memorable for Felix – he underwent international criminal law and advocacy training at Leiden University back in 2009, with experience on ICC cases concerning Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes which are the specified crimes under the Rome Statute. He also attended court hearings at the ICC and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and interacted with the prosecutors and international criminal practitioners in the Hague.

The ICC moot question this year concerns an appeal from the ICC Pre-trial Chamber’s decision to confirm charges on a Crimes Against Humanity case. Felix presided the preliminary rounds of the competition and heard submissions from international student teams playing the roles of Prosecutor, Defence Counsel and Government Counsel.
